A vintage car enthusiast has been fined €200 at Waterford District Court for careless driving on the N25.

Albert Lennon (56), of Swiftsheath, Jenkinstown, Kilkenny, was before Judge John Cheatle for careless driving at N25 Knockannagh, Waterford, on October 12, 2025.

Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that Garda Michelle Egan of the road traffic unit was on patrol when, at approximately 2:15pm, she observed the defendant in a Shelby Cobra driving at 147km an hour in the 100km zone.

Garda Egan stopped the defendant, and he said his speed was due to a “momentary lapse in judgement”, and the garda noted the man was cooperative.

The court was told that Mr Lennon had no previous convictions.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said the N25 had become “synonymous with speed” and the protocol was to arrest drivers caught. His client, he said, is in his 50s and has a son of school-going age.

The car was a “labour of love” and is not used very often. On this occasion, the defendant was returning from an event in Dungarvan with his son.

Mr Cunningham said his client is “well regarded” in the vintage car scene and often takes part in charity runs. He said his client wished to stress that he had not been speeding the entire time, only on this stretch of road, but that his arrest at the roadside had been a “learning curve” for him.

Since the incident, Mr Lennon has completed a driver awareness course at his own expense.

Judge Cheatle noted that traffic was light and the weather was good on the day of the incident. He fined the defendant €200 and gave him four months to pay.
