Proposed new pontoon at Villierstown Quay

Public consultation has opened for the enhancement of Villierstown Quay in Co Waterford.

The primary objective of this project is for the upgrade and enhancement of the existing access to the River Blackwater for water based recreational activities.

The development will consist of the construction of reinforced concrete canoe steps on the riverbank of the Blackwater. These steps will provide a safe and easily accessible launch point for canoes, kayaks and other similar light water craft.

Currently, these type of water craft are launched to the river on the existing slipway. However, that slipway has been found to be unsuitable and is slippery underfoot, causing people to slip and fall while launching their craft.

Replacement of the existing floating pontoon is also planned, as it was also deemed no longer fit for purpose, with a new modern floating pontoon proposed

A canoe washdown area, resurfacing of the existing asphalt surface of the quay and resurfacing of the existing slipway is also proposed.

Also planned is the construction of a path and steps to the south of the quay to provide access to the water. Works include the removal of overgrown native vegetation on the river’s edge.

Nature inspired play features are part of the plans. Features include timber stepping posts, logs, tunnels, and stone boulders, reflecting the pattern and design language of the existing tree canopies.

Play features will also double as informal seating and gathering opportunities, with a hammock swing, for both playing and sitting.

A canoe and kayak washdown area is proposed for the landscaped area at the back of the canoe steps and a timber observation deck is proposed for the area to the north of the site.

The deck is situated in this location to take in the views to Dromana Woods to the north, and views across the river.
