This Halloween, the Irish Wake Museum in Waterford invites visitors to experience Samhain with two very different events, one for families seeking an authentic Irish celebration, and one for those ready to explore the darker side of the city’s past.
From October 27 to 30, families are invited to step inside the Irish Wake Museum for a tour with a twist.
The journey takes visitors through centuries of Irish customs surrounding life, death and remembrance, from early Christian rites to 20th-century traditions.
Along the way, guests will uncover curious superstitions, ancient beliefs and the rituals that shaped Irish life.
To keep the spirit of Samhain alive, families are encouraged to take part in an age-old Irish custom of dressing up.
This family-friendly tour offers an experience that is both thought-provoking and enchanting, celebrating Irish folklore and memory.
Recommended for ages eight and above, the Halloween Wake Tours will run daily from 11:15 am with limited spaces available.
For something a little more sinister, the 'Waterford After Dark: Crime, Grime & Graveyards' tour is on the cards.
From October 27 to 30 at 7 pm, the curators of Waterford Treasures will lead daring guests on a ninety minute walking tour exploring the city’s more sinister secrets.
This after-dark experience reveals the hidden side of Ireland’s oldest city, where vampires, ghosts, murderers and restless souls linger in the tales of centuries past.
From the Viking Triangle to Ballybricken, visitors will hear stories of tragedy, mystery, and the macabre.
This event is strictly for those aged 16 and over and includes some hilly terrain and steps along the route.
