“Totally bizarre” – Still no food or drink services on Waterford trains

Renewed calls have been made to reintroduce catering services on Iarnród Éireann trains.

The service, which once offered tea, coffee and snacks, was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and is yet to be restored nationwide.

Only two routes across the country currently offer such services, the Dublin to Cork service and the Dublin to Belfast Enterprise service.

Waterford Fianna Fáil councillor John O’Leary said this week that “it is chronic and bizarre that you cant get a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, or a glass of water all the way from Plunkett Station in Waterford to Heuston Station in Dublin.”

He added that for children and elderly people, the two hour journey can be particularly arduous without refreshments.

“It is absolutely ludicrous and Iarnród Éireann should step up and provide some kind of service" he said.

Waterford City and County Council Director of Services, Gabriel Hynes, said that the Council will be raising the issue with Iarnród Éireann during an upcoming scheduled meeting with the rail operator.

Another issue that is going to be raised is the necessity for an express train between Waterford and Dublin. Read more on this HERE.
