An event was recalled at the weekend of a time last year when a pot of traditional colcannon invoked fond memories of times gone by among the members of one social group in County Waterford.

Tom Murphy brought in a pot of the traditional Irish dish to the members of Tay and Mahon Valley Active Retirement Association during the year and in addition to being a hit with members at the time it was fondly recalled at the weekend by one of the ARA members.

Tom's colcannon was cooked over an open fire and as a spokesperson for the group said: "Tom brought in pot of colcannon, cooked on open fire, and with lumps of butter it was perfect and enjoyed by all present."

"It brought back memories," he added.

One of those memories recalled revolved around attending primary school around 1960 in the building now known as Barron Hall.

"The children, pupils would bring in bottles of tea or chocolate, [and] those bottles were put in front of the fire in a semi-circle for approximately 30 minutes to warm before lunch break," said the group member.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Monday, February 9, appropriately enough, in Barron Hall, from 2pm to 4pm.

"We will have our 2026 AGM at this gathering, and for anybody interested, we will have an update on WCC Private Home Upgrade Grants, which include key local authority and supported grants, Mobility Aid Grants and Housing Adaptation grants," said the group spokesperson.

"If you want to join us for the chat and cuppa you are more than welcome," he added.
