Timber toilet seats, blockages and broken locks are some of the Lismore public toilet issues highlighted by Councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy.

In a post on social media, Cllr Mulcahy called for investment in the amenity.

"We are not talking about huge investment here, but the toilets are a bit of an embarrassment in a beautiful heritage town," said Cllr Mulcahy.

The councillor said he regularly highlights these issues in and out of council meetings.

In his post, he said the toilets regularly get blocked because the tank doesn't fill up fast enough.

He described the timber toilet seat, one of which is broken, as "unsanitary and not be used anywhere in this day and age."

He also said the disability toilet is closed.

"They are badly in need of a refit. The actual building is well-appointed and in keeping with the architectural beauty of the town," said Cllr Mulcahy.

"It's a different story when you go inside," he added.

However, he acknowledged the council was working with limited resources: "I commend the local council, who are trying their best with limited resources. We are lucky enough to have tourists visiting the town. The state of the public toilets may be the memory some take away."

"There is a lot going on in the town," he said.

"The market on Sunday has just kicked off again," he added.

"There are plenty of annual events lined up, and the car park & toilets will be widely used. Lismore attracts a volume of visitors, which benefits all of West Waterford."
