‘There cannot be many mattresses left in Comeragh’ - waste days in Waterford a huge success

More than 400 mattresses were disposed of as part of a waste amnesty across Waterford.
More than 400 mattresses were disposed of as part of the waste amnesty held in Waterford in October.
That is according to Senior Executive Officer Dawn Wallace at a recent sitting of Comeragh Council during an update from the Environment section.
Ms Wallace said that figure does not include bulky waste, which was also collected.
“There cannot be many mattresses left in the Comeragh region,” said Ms Wallace.
Waterford City and County Council held a three-day bulky goods amnesty in October.
The collection days were held in Lismore, Kilmacthomas and Tramore. Members of the public were invited to dispose of items such as mattresses, beds and other large pieces of furniture, free of charge. But Ms Wallace said despite the amnesty days, people still dump these items illegally.
Ms Wallace was responding to comments made by Councillor Liam Brazil, who praised initiatives by the council to tackle illegal dumping.
He said that although there was not a great take up, “it was great to have had them.”
At the same meeting, Cllr John O’Leary said more involvement is needed from takeaways to tackle litter.
“A lot of the work of Tidy Towns litter picks is litter arising from takeaways,” said Cllr O’Leary.
