At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District Council, Independent Councillor Joe Kelly raised the issue of public toilets in Tramore – an issue that has been raised in several previous meetings.

He said, “The disabled toilets at the promenade in Tramore were locked over Easter.”

He continued, “I went out for the purpose of seeing how the toilets performed after it had been raised at previous meetings.”

Cllr Kelly told the council that whilst the toilets for able-bodied people were open, the disabled toilets were “locked with a padlock”.

“It just so happened as I was standing there, a family with a disabled child were trying to get in there and couldn’t get access.”

He said that at the last meeting, the council said they would be open. The Waterford News & Star can confirm that at the March Metropolitan District Meeting, it was confirmed that the public toilets in Tramore would be opening soon.

Cllr Kelly asked, “How can we have the other ones open but that particular one has a padlock?”

A council executive responded that he “agreed” with Cllr Kelly’s point.

He said, “That shouldn’t have happened.”
