Students cause significant damage to house during 'wild' party in Waterford

“I hope you have learned a lesson when it comes to trusting other people,” Judge Staunton said.

In Waterford Courthouse last week, Judge Kevin Staunton heard about an incident involving a group of students who caused €3,000 worth of damage to a property in Tramore during a party.

The man who appeared in court in relation to the incident, Ameer Zakaria Prendergast (20), of 9 Parkside, Johnswell Road, Kilkenny, rented the house just outside Tramore on Booking.com for him and his four friends, as part of freshers' celebrations.

On the last night spent in the house, it was alleged that a party took place with a large number of people. Significant damage was done.

Mr. Prendergast was charged contrary to Section 2(1) of the Criminal Damage Act and has no previous convictions.

According to his solicitor, Mr. Prendergast quickly admitted to the damages and attempted to resolve the situation with Booking.com. He later went to the garda station to accept responsibility.

He subsequently sent €3,000 to the owner of the property.

His solicitor said that he was “let down” by his other friends, who took no responsibility over the incident.

Judge Kevin Staunton said that “significant damage was done” to the property and that it was probably a “very wild party”.

He said that the incident will serve as a life lesson for Mr. Prendergast, as he “was left carry the can” after his friends “rode off into the sunset”.

“I hope you have learned a lesson when it comes to trusting other people,” Judge Staunton said.

The matter was struck out.
