Local Notes: Memorial run, sports news, graveyard Mass, quote for the week and more
There are lots of events taking place in Ballyduff and Kilmeaden over the coming weeks.
The Liz (Eilís) Hayes Memorial Run will return on Friday, August 7. Liz was a friend to all and a caring teacher who brought great joy and fun to her classroom. Running was another of her great passions and she was a highly respected member of West Waterford Athletics Club. The five-mile memorial run and walk will begin at Ballyduff NS at 7pm. Registration on the night opens at 6pm. Those wishing to register in advance or make a donation can do so through Eventmaster.
The annual graveyard Mass in Ballyduff Cemetery took place on Tuesday, July 28, at 7pm. The occasion provided an opportunity for people to remember loved ones who have died and to pray for those who have no family members left to remember them. Blessed with fine weather, the gathering was enhanced by the presence of Fr John Harris as celebrant. The parish choir also made a special appearance during its summer break and provided beautiful music. Thanks were extended to Maurice and Aisling for their ongoing work maintaining the cemetery grounds. Following Mass, refreshments were served in the Community Centre, where people enjoyed the opportunity to meet and chat. Thanks were expressed to all who helped on the evening and to those who donated cakes, biscuits and buns.
Walking Football takes place every Wednesday evening at 7pm at the club grounds and new participants are always welcome. All that is required is a pair of runners and a smile. Supporters are encouraged to follow the club's Facebook page for fixtures, news and updates. The club's monthly cash draw continues to raise valuable funds towards the development of club facilities.
The local community has come together to support the Hoban family, who recently lost their home and belongings in a devastating fire. An online fundraising page has been established to assist with clothing, essential items, temporary accommodation and living expenses. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Further details can be found on the Ballyduff Lower GAA Club and Ballyduff AFC Facebook pages, where supporters can access the donation link and share details of the appeal.
Parishioners are reminded of the dedicated work carried out by sacristan Ann Nolan, whose friendly and welcoming presence helps make the church such a special place. A second collection will be held at Mass on Sunday, August 9, as a gesture of appreciation for her commitment and service. Parishioners are invited to support the collection as generously as possible. The church renovation committee continues its fundraising efforts to complete planned improvement works on the church building, including painting both inside and outside. Donations of any size are welcome and can be made through committee members, by bank transfer or by placing a contribution in an envelope marked "Church Renovation Fund" in the offertory basket or sacristy. The parish is still awaiting the appointment of a new priest and, until then, Sunday Mass continues at 10am.
Congratulations to the U16 Division 2/3 team, who recorded an impressive 3-19 to 1-13 victory over St Mary's in Kill. The team worked well together throughout and thoroughly deserved the result. Supporters can visit the club's Facebook page for information on all activities, fixtures and events taking place at Tom Cheasty Park.
