2026 was the 30th anniversary of the "Clean Up The Comeraghs" event.

The "Clean Up" is an event organised by the Comeragh Community Development Group every Easter Monday to tackle illegal rubbish dumping.

The work of the group this year was commended by Cllr Liam Brazil, who congratulated their efforts on behalf of the Council.

Cllr Brazil said, “I’d like to welcome the great work they did picking rubbish off the roads and ditches on Easter Monday morning. There were about a hundred people turned up.

“There’s great amenities in the Comeragh district and having this group is so important. The work they’re doing for the past 30 years is just fantastic and I don’t know where we’d be if we didn’t have these groups. They’re going from strength to strength."

Cllr Brazil said the Council must take a more proactive approach to ensure that rubbish dumpers are apprehended.

“It’s not these groups’ work to be doing, I don’t believe anyone should be picking up rubbish from anyone else. So we have to do something, and I believe we as a council don’t do enough, because if we were it wouldn’t be happening on a continuous basis.

"I believe CCTV is the only way to do this. We have to try apprehend the people dumping this rubbish."
