A new static safety camera that was erected on the N25 between Waterford and New Ross in recent weeks will become operational this coming Friday, May 30.

In a statement to Waterford News & Star, a spokesperson for the Gardaí said the camera will commence operation that day.

Located in the townsland of Ballynamona the camera is sited near the location of a number of serious accidents in recent months, some of which resulted in fatalities.

"Vehicles detected driving in excess of the posted speed limit will be subject to prosecution from 12 midday on Friday, May 39," said the spokesperson in the statement.

Prosecution of speeding offences takes place by Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) and the FCN is a €160 fine accompanied by three penalty points.

Static safety cameras have been proven internationally to reduce speeding and are now operational on the N17 Mayo, N59 Galway, N13 Donegal, N69 Limerick, R772 Wexford, N22 Cork and N80 Carlow.

Five Average Safety Cameras are also operational in the Dublin Port Tunnel, the M7, N3 Cavan, N5 Mayo and N2 Meath.

"There are also 58 GoSafe mobile safety cameras operational across 1,500 locations as well as safety cameras operated by Gardaí," said the Garda spokesperson.
