South East Radiotherapy (SERT) received €6,000 worth of support from the AIB Community €1 million fund.

SERT is a charity that provides free transport services to those battling cancer across the South East.

SERT was established over 20 years ago at a time when cancer patients were forced to either travel to Dublin and Cork for radiotherapy, with the charity’s volunteer drivers helping patients get their required treatment.

In 2006, a radiation centre opened at UPMC Whitfield on the Cork Road.

Fleet

Currently, a fleet of five nine-seater vehicles and 150 voluntary drivers operate across Waterford City, Clonmel, Dungarvan, Kilkenny, Wexford and South Tipperary, transporting patients to UPMC Whitfield.

Gordon Watson, a retired consultant surgeon, is the chairperson of SERT, along with eight other trustees.

The AIB Community Fund supports over 70 charitable organisations annually. Registered charities are nominated by customers, employees, and the public, with the charities submitting a pitch for funding that is reviewed by AIB's independent panel.
