Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald raised issue with the manner in which Irish Tricolours are being flown in Waterford.

Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald raised issue with the manner in which Irish Tricolours are being flown in Waterford at a council meeting, labelling improper flag bearing “disrespectful”.

He said there are multiple Tricolours being flown incorrectly in Waterford while speaking to the Waterford News & Star.

“Whoever did put them up should really, if they're not displayed properly, they should be taken down.

“If a flag is flying properly, I don't see any problem with it. But if it's hanging by one corner, or if it's wrapped around or if it's torn - the protocol of the flag says it should be respected, and the flag should fly properly, and it should be in good condition.

“There's a few in Tramore. There's a few around the place that they don't look right.”

Cllr. Fitzgerald said his comments were not an overt criticism of the far right, and he doesn’t know who is hanging up the Tricolours.

“Not that I'm any fan of the far right,” Cllr. Fitzgerald said.

“I have my suspicions about who's actually putting stuff up, and who's doing what, and who's starting riots and things like that.

“There is a protocol there that you can get on the internet. You can pick it up on the internet, of what way a flag should be flown, the national flag should be shown, and what respect it should be given.”
