Should the car parks on the quay in Waterford city remain?

Parking on Waterford's quayside was described as a 'lifeline' for nearby hotels.

At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District Council, it emerged that the lease for the car park on the quay would be reaching its end soon. This led to a discussion on whether the lease for the car park should be renewed.

The central car parks on the quayside are currently owned by Waterford City and County Council and are leased to private operators.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Jason Murphy said: “The Waterford quayside is the longest urban quayside on the island of Ireland, and it's not properly utilised.”

He commended the new south side plaza on the Quay and said: “It just shows what could be done with the rest of the quayside. I would hate to see another lease written for these private carpark operators."

Council Executive Paul Flynn said: “We would have to provide an alternative.”

Mr Flynn said the parking on the quay is a “lifeline” for hotels.

He went on to say that the council have committed to taking on an overall review of the parking situation in Waterford City.
