SETU Youth Choir was honoured with a mayoral reception in City Hall on Tuesday, January 13, following their success at the International Music Festival in Bratislava in July 2025.
The Youth Choir won two Gold awards and one Silver award at the festival, competing against contingents from around the world.
The choir is comprised of fourth to sixth-year students.
“Travelling abroad to compete on an international stage is no small undertaking, particularly for young performers,” said Mayor of Waterford City and County Council Seamus Ryan.
“From travelling, rehearsals, performances, competitions and public concerts, this was a demanding and ambitious performance.
“Performing your repertoire across three separate competitions…upper voices, lower voices, and the combined choir… speaks volumes about both the musical standard you hold and the commitment shown by every singer involved.
“To come home with two Gold awards and one Silver award, competing alongside choirs and orchestras across Europe, and beyond, is an exceptional achievement.
“It reflects not just talent, but discipline, preparation, and a real sense of collective purpose. These are lessons that extend beyond music.”
The group performed a rendition of ‘Mo Ghile Mear’ in City Hall, led by the Choir’s conductor Niall Crowley, with Spencer Bowman as soloist and Conn Fenton on the bodhran.
Mayor Ryan said it was one of his favourite Irish language songs.
“I am particularly proud that Waterford continues to nurture young people who are confident, creative and outward-looking,” said Mayor Ryan.
“Through music, you have not only achieved excellence, but also built friendships, broadened horizons, and represented your community with pride.
“To the young singers here today…what you have achieved already is something to be genuinely proud of.
“Whether music remains a lifelong passion or simply a cherished chapter, the confidence, teamwork and resilience you have developed will stay with you.”
