SETU opens its doors to prospective students

SETU Waterford opened its doors to prospective new students recently for a Spring Open Evening event that proved very successful.

The university welcomed students, their parents and guardians to explore vibrant the university life at South East Technological University’s (SETU) Cork Road Campus in Waterford.

Leaving Certificate students from across the south east and beyond descended on the campus.

A spokesperson for the university said the evening was aimed at those applying for undergraduate courses through the CAO, as well as individuals considering postgraduate, part-time, or professional development opportunities.

As such it was aimed at providing valuable insights into life as an SETU student.

From live demonstrations, workshops and Try SETU events, to talks and presentations, the evening allowed attendees to engage with the SETU community.

"Through talking to lecturers and support staff, prospective students had the chance to explore their chosen fields of study, and receive information on fees, grants, and student supports," noted the spokesperson.

Guided campus tours showcased SETU’s state-of-the-art facilities, while current students shared their experiences of university life.

The event also allowed CAO applicants to involve their parents, guardians and friends in their university decision-making process, helping them select the right path for their future.

Dr Derek O'Byrne, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Teaching & Learning, at SETU commented: “We encourage prospective students to research their options thoroughly, ask the right questions, and choose a course that aligns with their career aspirations, strengths, and interests.”

With one more Spring Open Day coming up, Dr O’Byrne expressed delight in inviting prospective students and their families to the Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow on Saturday, May 9, from 10am until 2pm.

Emphasising the importance of in-person campus events, he stated: “Our Spring Open Evenings reflect our ‘right student, right programme’ approach, ensuring that students make informed decisions about their future."

"We encourage prospective students to research their options thoroughly, ask the right questions, and choose a course that aligns with their career aspirations, strengths, and interests," he said.

SETU offers over 140 CAO courses across a wide range of disciplines, including business, engineering, architecture, sports and nursing, law, social sciences, arts and psychology, creative and performing arts, languages, tourism and hospitality, science, and computing.

New programme offerings include Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Home Economics, Family & Community Studies and the addition of Level 8 options in the Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture programmes.

These programmes will begin with their first intakes in September 2026.
