'Serious issue' - dangerous conditions for pedestrians on Waterford city roads

The section of road at Claremount Road and Sunrise Crescent has been flagged since 2018.

Pedestrian safety in Waterford City was raised at a recent Council meeting.

Councillor Donal Barry (Independent) said at the latest meeting of the Metropolitan District: "There's a serious issue of pedestrian safety along the Claremount Road and Sunrise Crescent."

Seven years 'too long to wait'

He described pedestrians being unable to cross or walk safely along the road and said that the problem had been flagged as far back as 2018.

He said: "In the meantime residents there have had to face the real risk of simply going across the road at a junction.

"This situation is unsafe and unacceptable. Seven years is too long to wait."

Cllr Barry asked for engineers to look into the issue and to create a safe crossing and accessible footpaths that can be used safely by wheelchair-users and parents with prams.

Barrack Street

Councillor Joe Kelly (Independent) spoke about the pedestrian facilities along Barrack Street.

"There is an element, I suppose, of pedestrian crossings but it is very dangerous. There's still lots of traffic that won't stop and quite literally everyone using it is at risk."

Cllr Kelly went on: "I wonder if we could put flashing lights or some other improvements on that crossing to help people. With the dark nights coming, it's going to be even more dangerous."

A member of the Executive told Cllr Barry that the idea would be assessed under the relevant scheme and that the footpaths would be reviewed to see if they needed "necessary repairs".
