Sean McKeown to take over as CEO of Waterford

Sean McKeown will take up the position of CEO of Waterford City and County Council.

Sean McKeown is set to take over the reins of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Waterford City and County Council.

Mr McKeown revealed the news on LinkedIn, stating: "I am hugely honoured and privileged to be confirmed as Chief Executive by the elected members of Waterford City & County Council.

"I wish to thank the Mayor, Jason Murphy, and the elected members for approving my appointment."

He continued: "I am looking forward to working with them and all the wonderful staff across the various teams in the Council’s service areas to make Waterford the best place in the country to live, work, visit and do business!"

Former CEO

In the announcement, Mr McKeown thanked both Ivan Grimes and former CEO Michael Walsh, who stepped down from the role in April.

He stated: "I wish to thank my colleague, Ivan Grimes, who has served as Interim Chief Executive, and I want to especially acknowledge the significant contribution that my predecessor, Michael Walsh, has made to Waterford."

He added: "There is a strong pipeline of projects and plans in place, and I am excited to be at the heart of delivering them.

"I also look forward to developing a close working relationship with the local community and business stakeholders over the coming years."

Kilkenny County Council

Mr McKeown previously worked as the Director of Planning, Economic and Environmental Services for Kilkenny County Council.

He also had a role as Director of the South East Action Plan for Jobs, a five-county project to increase employment in Waterford, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Carlow and Wexford.

Mr McKeown already has some experience as an acting CEO for a local authority, having stepped in as CEO for Kilkenny in 2022 after the retirement of former CEO Colette Byrne.
