Sadness at passing of former Waterford soccer legend who guided his club to a historic first

Portlaw United Fc was saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Rowan who Captained the 1954 Infirmary Cup winning team
There was sadness felt in County Waterford with the news that one of Portlaw United FC's most well known and respected former players had passed away.
Tommy Rowan was the Captain of the 1954 Infirmary Cup winning team and there was great sadness felt in the club when news broke of his passing.
That cup was the first trophy ever won by the club.
Tommy was a fantastic player and went on to play for Waterford FC in the league of Ireland.
On emigrating to London, he continued to play at a really high level before taking up refereeing with the FA.
However, even though Tommy had left Portlaw many years, he always maintained a keen interest in his 'local' and former club and always kept in contact.
The club offered its sincere condolences to wife Alice, his family and friends.
