Rubbish dumpers in scenic rural Waterford need to be apprehended

Recently, Waterford city was once again been ranked as the cleanest city in Ireland.

The achievement was celebrated by local representatives in the Comeragh district last week, who commended the Council’s outdoor staff and local volunteers and community groups who tackle litter on a weekly basis across the county.

Cllr Liam Brazil said that Waterford has "come an awful long way from where we were ten or fifteen years ago".

He added that the achievement will help drive tourism across Waterford and said that great credit must be given to Tidy Towns and community groups who pick up litter nearly every Saturday and Sunday.

Cllr Brazil added however that the Council must do more to apprehend rubbish dumpers

"I honestly believe it’s not anybody’s business to be picking up rubbish except the people who are actually dumping it. We have to get a strong message out; leave no trace."

Cllr John O'Leary shared the same sentiment, saying that last week he came across a large amount of rubbish dumped near a section of the Greenway.

“Unfortunately I was out walking recently on the Greenway, where there’s a little carpark that feeds into the Greenway connection from Ballyduff to Suir Valley Railway, and lo and behold there was a load of rubbish dumped in that little car park.

"It was such an unsightly and unwarranted pile of rubbish from people who have no regard for the environment. Lets hope some evidence will be found that will apprehend somebody who is responsible for this unsavoury behaviour."
