Rice Bridge to get major lift to make Waterford's doorstep presentable

Waterford City and County Council has outlined its plans for the upkeep of Rice Bridge, as residents of the surrounding areas become increasingly frustrated at the deterioration of its appearance and fear it may deter visitors on their approach to the city.
A spokesperson for the Council explained to the Waterford News & Star that it has "gone to tender for the mechanical and electrical upgrading of Rice Bridge".
"These works are expected to be completed within the next 18 months. Following completion of these works, the next phase will consist of improvement works to the aesthetics of the bridge," the spokesperson added.
Residents of the area say they have raised their concerns with local representatives, yet had no response on the matter.
One resident described his frustration and said Rice Bridge needs a major overhaul as signage is incorrect, railings are dirty and bent and the same flags have been up since last year.
"It's our doorstep and the main entrance to the city, we should be proud of that and make it more presentable for ourselves and for tourists who visit Waterford," he said.
The Council also confirmed that a contractor has been appointed to repair the damaged section of the railings on the Ferrybank side of Rice Bridge, and these works "are due to be completed in the next four to six weeks".
