Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan along with Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, John Cummins TD, officially opened two new Waterford City and County Council social housing developments on on Monday, June 15.
The first development, Sally Court (Cúirt na Sailí), in Ballytruckle, was delivered on the site of the former Garvey’s pub and comprises 10 homes.
A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council said the scheme includes a mix of two and three-bedroom houses, an accessible two-bedroom bungalow, and a range of one and two-bedroom duplex units.
"This variety of housing types ensures the development can meet a broad range of housing needs, from individuals and couples to growing families, while also promoting inclusive living through accessible design," she said.
Speaking at the opening, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seamus Ryan, said: “What makes this project particularly meaningful is its transformation of a brownfield site. Once occupied by a former pub, this location has been carefully reimagined and redeveloped into a vibrant residential setting."
“In doing so, it not only makes efficient use of land within the city but also contributes positively to the surrounding streetscape," he said.
"The site’s position, bounded by three roads, presented both challenges and opportunities, and it is clear from the finished result that these have been addressed with creativity and care," he added.
The design team for Sally Court was led by Brian Dunlop Architects, with construction carried out by Suirside Construction.
Following the Ballytruckle opening, the Minister and Mayor travelled to Ferrybank to officially open The Lodges (Na Lóistí), on Fountain Street; an age-friendly and disability-inclusive housing scheme.

The 14-unit development comprises two one-bedroom accessible bungalows and 12 duplex units, designed to support independent living and meet the needs of a diverse range of residents.
Like Sally Court, The Lodges units were developed on a brownfield site, formerly occupied by Flynn’s pub.
The local authority spokesperson said the regeneration of the site revitalised the surrounding area and now contributes significantly to the enhancement of the local environment.
Located just a short walk from the North Quays development and approximately 10 minutes from Waterford City centre, the spokesperson said the Lodges development demonstrates the value of collaborative partnership working between Waterford City and County Council, ROJO Studio Architects, and Nevin Construction.
Minister Cummins congratulated all those involved in delivering the development and wished residents every happiness in their new homes.
“It is absolutely fantastic to be able to witness homes being delivered to families and individuals who now happily call these properties home," he said.
"I would like to commend Waterford City and County Council, the design team and contractors who have delivered two top quality schemes on Brownfield sites and all the associated challenges this poses," he added, before commenting: “I want to wish all residents in both Sally Court and Fountain Street every health, happiness and fond memories in their new homes.”
