Praise for Waterford firefighter who completed 24-hour charity challenge in full gear
Sub Officer Shane Guildea
A Waterford firefighter has completed a gruelling 24-hour charity challenge in aid of Down Syndrome Cork.
Tallow-based Sub Officer Shane Guildea ran four miles (6.4km) every four hours over a 24-hour period, covering a total distance of 38.4km.
And as if that wasn’t an accomplishment enough, he completed the 4x4x24 challenge in full fire service gear.
West Waterford councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy praised the firefighters’ endurance and determination in aid of a very worthy cause.
“Shane’s achievement is nothing short of outstanding. To take on a challenge like this is one thing, but to complete it in full fire kit shows the kind of determination and resilience that defines our fire service personnel. We’re incredibly proud of him.”

Tallow Fire and Rescue Service team wrote on social media that they were very proud of their colleague and his “incredible achievement”.
“A fantastic effort for a brilliant cause and a great example of the dedication both on and off duty.
“Donations are welcome. Contact Shane.
“Well done, Shane, from all the team,” wrote the Tallow Fire and Rescue Service.
But Sub Officer Guidea was not the only one to take the challenge and Cllr Mulcahy said he would like to recognise that too.
“I also want to say a huge well done to everyone across West Waterford who took on this challenge. It’s no easy task, and the level of commitment shown right across our communities has been brilliant to see.” “This was all done in support of Down Syndrome Cork, which makes it even more special. It shows the strong community spirit that exists within our fire service and across West Waterford.
“Shane has set a brilliant example and it’s a fantastic achievement for a great cause,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
