'Playing with fire' - Gardaí to crackdown on fireworks as incidents reported in Waterford City

Gardaí have been alerted to several reports to bonfires and fireworks in Waterford.

Recent reported incidents of fireworks and bonfires in parts of Waterford City has left locals shocked and distressed.

Gardaí in Waterford are tackling the illegal use of fireworks as part of Operation Tombola.

A local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Waterford News and Star that while incidents like these "have been going on for years", in recent times the situation has appeared to escalate.

The resident claimed they witnessed children throwing objects at fire brigades entering areas where bonfires and fireworks had been set.

The resident said: "Someone will get hurt. They're literally playing with fire."

As young as 11

The source said that children as young as 11 are out on the streets getting caught up in such activity, as well as men in their 20s, who can be seen drinking and smoking.

According to the resident, there are a number of "escape routes" where individuals run down whenever Gardaí arrive

The local said that the anti-social behaviour has impacted their everyday lives.

They said: "I just want to sit down of an evening with a cup of tea and watch Eastenders. It's an absolute nightmare. We're afraid to go anywhere because we don't want to leave the house alone."

Helicopter

The resident became extremely concerned over the weekend when Rescue 117 was flying over the area, searching for a missing young woman (the woman was later found safe and well).

Fireworks were being set off in the area while the helicopter was flying above, potentially disrupting the rescue service's mission. The local said: "On the night I spoke to two young boys and told them 'that's not right!'".

Inspector Garda Shay Keevans is encouraging anyone who witnesses fireworks, bonfires or any other anti-social behaviour in their area to call their local Garda Station or the

Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

There are a number of Community Policing Teams in Waterford City, and they can be contacted at (051) 305300.
