Prospect Lodge, Gracedieu Road. Major parts of the wall tiles have fallen away.

At a recent meeting, Councillor Donal Barry (Independent) raised the current situation of a 245-year-old property in Waterford City.

Councillor Barry said: "Prospect Lodge in Gracedieu is one of the historical houses in Waterford, built in 1780."

He referenced the deteriorating wall of the property and asked what steps were being taken to preserve the historical site for "future generations".

He continued: "This is one of our protected structures so I'm asking what are the Council doing or is there any indication for the owners to get this house into repairs for future generations."

A member of Waterford Executive said that the matter would be investigated.

Historical significance

Prospect House was built circa 1780 and was used as an ecclesiastical residence. It is a notable building in Waterford for retaining much of its original architectural and design character.

According to the National Built Heritage Service, the building is in a fairly good condition structurally, describing the Lodge as "a fine and imposing substantial-scale house, composed of irregularly displaced proportions and distinguished by the slate-hanging to all elevations".

The appraisal continued: "The house is an important component of the streetscape and accommodates the topography of the sloping site through the addition of dormer attic accommodation to the section to south-east."
