South Eastern Mountain Rescue (SEMRA) successfully assisted to a walker at Coumshingaun last weekend.

At  6.23pm on Sunday March 16, SEMRA received a call to assist a fallen walker with an ankle injury.

The walker had slipped on loose stone while descending the North Ridge.

“This part of the loop has become very eroded and is a regular location for us”, said the SEMRA in a statement.

Team members and vehicles arrived at the mast in Kilclooney just after 7pm.

The first party up the hill travelled light and fast to reach the casualty to assess them and keep them warm, while the rest of the team carried the stretcher and equipment.

By 9pm, the casualty was loaded onto the stretcher and the long carry out began with the stretcher belayed down a steep descent.

The carry out involved over 20 team members.

In the statement, SEMRA said: “Steep and rocky ground made for slow progress in some places with the stretcher being carried and sledded depending on the terrain.

"Furze bushes either side of the narrow track added to the stretcher party woes. The casualty remained in good spirits all the way down, despite what must have been a very bumpy ride.”

The stretcher party reached the car park just after 11pm and the casualty was transferred to a National Ambulance Service ambulance.

Stand down was issued at 11.42pm and everyone got safely off the hill.

Team members wished a speedy recovery to the casualty.
