Orange warning in place as fire crews continue to tackle wildfire in the Comeragh Mountains 

Fire crews are again in attendance this morning (Monday, July 27), at a gorse fire in the Mahon Falls area of the Comeragh Mountains.

The fire was reported at approximately 3pm on Sunday, July 26, and was attended by crews from Kilmacthomas, Portlaw and Dungarvan. 

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council told Waterford News & Star that while a large area has been burned, firefighters have prevented the blaze from spreading into nearby forestry. 

"No buildings are currently at risk and no injuries have been reported," said the spokesperson.

Avoid The Area

Access roads in the vicinity are narrow, and members of the public are asked to avoid the area to ensure that ongoing fire service operations are not obstructed.

An Orange Fire Danger Notice remains in place. 

"The public is urged to exercise particular caution in all outdoor amenity areas and to avoid any activity that could result in a fire being started," said the spokesperson.

"Campfires, fire pits and barbecues should not be lit in these areas, and particular care should be taken when disposing of cigarettes or other smoking or combustible materials," he added.

The wildfire on the Comeragh Mountains created an almost apocalyptic scene overnight from the city over the weekend.

The fire was one of a number of that occurred over the last fortnight throughout a number of different counties.

The weekend also saw the fire service called into action to attend a wildfire in Tramore and its surrounding area - in the vicinity of the Metal Man.

It's understood that fire broke out in a field close to the famous landmark but the cause is unclear.

Meanwhile, the fire service in Co Tipperary tackled a very serious wildfire in Slievenamon from which smoke was felt across County Waterford.

That fire was first reported on July 20.
