The late Peter Power

Tributes have been paid to Waterford GAA stalwart, Peter Power, who passed away last week.

Peter gave a lifetime promoting hurling in the county, and was revered for his passion and commitment to fostering young talent.

He was coach to the 1992 under-21 county team, which won the Munster and All-Ireland titles, beating Offaly in a thrilling replay.

A tribute from Waterford GAA this week said: “He was schools' hurling coach in West Waterford for many, many years and over a sterling career, hundreds of boys and girls benefited from his expert tutelage, many of them going on to wear the Waterford jersey.

“He was centrally involved with the Dungarvan Colleges' team, which won the Harty and Croke Cups. He gave so much of his time and energy to clubs all over the county, and each and every one learned so much. He'll be sadly missed.”

At a meeting of the Dungarvan/Lismore district council, tributes were paid to Peter by a number of local councillors.

Cllr Damien Geoghegan said that Peter was a man “who made an enormous contribution, being one of the real unsung heroes of Gaelic games".

“The outpouring of sympathies towards Peter's family over the weekend was very, very notable indeed,” he added.

Cllr Tom Cronin, meanwhile, described Peter as a “superb man”.

“Peter Power was probably one of the best trainers this county ever had, especially at underage level," he said.
