One of six males discovered inside a shipping container on Monday, January 27, has claimed international protection.

In a statement to Waterford News & Star, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said the investigation into the matter is ongoing, after the nine males were discovered in a shipping container at Rosslare Europort on Monday morning.

"Six adult males have been refused leave to land in accordance with immigration legislation," said the Garda spokesperson.

"One adult male has claimed international protection and will now be processed by the International Protection Office (IPO)," he added.

Two of the males discovered are believed to be minors and are now in the care of Tusla.

Gardaí attached to Wexford Garda Station, supported by the Garda National Immigration Bureau, are investigating all of the circumstances of this incident.
