Obituary: Bernard Byrne was devoted to his family

The late Bernard Byrne

Bernard Byrne, of 92 Lismore Park, Waterford, passed away suddenly on March 7th, aged 79.

Born on May 10, 1946 in Arklow, Co. Wicklow, Bernard’s life was marked by devotion to family, pride in his work, and a quiet kindness felt by all who knew him.

Work brought Bernard to Waterford, where he met Kathleen Flavin in The Olympia.

They married in 1977 in the Holy Family Church and began life together in Lisduggan before settling in Lismore Park, creating a warm and welcoming home for their growing family.

A skilled foreman, Bernard worked with Sisks on major projects, including the Waterford Shopping Centre, and later with McInerney.

Trusted and respected, he was known for his steady leadership and strong work ethic.

In retirement, Bernard remained a valued neighbour, always ready to help with odd jobs, never seeking recognition.

He cherished darts, cards, and a couple of drinks with close friends Anthony Power, Andrew Burke and Leo Power.

They were simple gatherings fondly known as “shed nights.”

Bernard reposed at Thompson’s Funeral Home and was removed to Ballinaneashagh for burial.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Kathleen; sons Bernard (UK), Liam (Larchville), and James (Spain); daughters Avril and Amy (Lismore Park); and by his extended family, neighbours, and friends, who will miss his gentle humour, generous spirit, and steady presence.
