Waterford Animal Welfare is highlighting a case of animal neglect, which led to a horse having to be put to sleep.

The group posted on social media that on Saturday, they were checking on horses when they received a call about a mare in distress.

“We immediately responded to what became a very distressing and tragic call.

“We managed to get the mare into our horsebox by driving into the field. While travelling to the vets, we could see on the camera monitor the rapid decline of the mare,” wrote Waterford Animal Welfare.

Suirside Veterinary Clinic dispatched one of their large animal vet who determined that the mare was malnourished, dehydrated, had a severe respiratory infection and was in heart failure.

The decision was taken on the roadside to put the mare to sleep humanely.

But the group said this is not an isolated case for them.

No owner, no microchip, no accountability, no court case, no hope. This is the reality we face on a regular basis. Weeks of hunger and neglect,” wrote the group.

Waterford Animal Welfare is a non-profit organisation, providing animal rescue including 24/7 emergency rescue, rehabilitation & re-releasing, public advice, adoption and more.

While the group has received some state support, they are reliant on community donations and are themselves volunteers.
