New speed limits to come into effect in Waterford next month

The new limits are part of a national review of speed limit legislation

New speed limits for local roads in Waterford are set to come into effect in February.

At this month's sitting of Waterford City and Council plenary council, councillor Pat Fitzgerald asked the Director of Services for Roads, Water and Environment Fergus Gleeson when the new speed limits would come into effect.

Mr Gleeson said the poles are up, and the signs will be in place in February.

“This is done under national legislation, so I would assume that An Garda Síochána has been informed of the changes in the speed limit signs,” said Mr Gleeson.

Under the new legislation, local roads, which currently have a speed limit of 80km/h, will be reduced to 60km/h.

Urban roads will be changed from 50km/h to 30km/h, but not until later in the year.
