Waterford City and County Council has advanced plans to develop a new playground in Ballygunner following a successful public consultation process. The council’s planning department said the playground was expected to be completed in 2026.

The development will include a new playground, plaza areas and footpaths with pedestrian lighting, art, seating, and cycling stands.

The development will take place on the corner of Kilcarragh Park and Williamstown Road.

Social Democrat Councillor Mary Roche welcomed the project, describing playgrounds as “the hardest working pieces of infrastructure that we have”.

“They owe us nothing in terms of the value that they give to our communities, and the amount of use that they get is absolutely phenomenal,” Cllr. Roche said.

Independent councillor Declan Barry also championed the proposal.

“The Williamstown Road, the Dunmore Road, is always saturated with housing, and more and more coming, but what I don't see coming hand in hand is amenities to go with all these new residents and housing estates popping up everywhere, so really delighted with that,” Cllr. Barry said.

Questions were raised regarding the naming of the development. The playground’s working title will be named after Kilcarragh, though councillors felt the location meant Ballygunner would be a more apt title.

The council’s planning department said the suggestion would be taken on board.
