Waterford Council is proposing to develop new pedestrian lighting within the People’s Park.
The Council said they identified the increased demand for access to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians through the park at night.
The proposal involves the installation of new lighting to the perimeter path network and fountain area of the park, to be delivered in a manner to minimise the disruption to the amenity.
Plans include the installation of 43 lighting columns. The lights will be directed downwards away from the treetops with tree crowns and canopies remaining unilluminated.
A number of local councillors supported the development this week:
Cllr Seamus Ryan commented: “I’m delighted to see this back on the agenda. It was brought to my attention as a matter of security, to increase security in People’s Park, and frequent users of the park, of which I am one myself, have been asking for this."
Cllr Jason Murphy added: “This has been raised on numerous occasions over two or three councils so I’m delighted to see it happening. I’m very proud of People’s Park and there’s been a lot of improvements there over the years."
Frank Quinlan said that People’s Park is the “jewel in the crown of Waterford City", adding “the more we develop it and improve it, the better."
Cllr Joeanne Bailey recommended that CCTV also be installed.
