New figures for Waterford show drug and public order incidents down with theft on the rise

The figures are compiled by the CSO from garda administrative records, Ireland’s National Police and Security Service and PULSE.

There was a decrease in recorded drugs and public order incidents in Waterford in quarter three of 2025.

New figures released by the Central Statistics Office in the Recorded Crime Q3 2025 data set showed that controlled drugs offences totaled 171 incidents in the Waterford Garda Division compared to 277 in Q3 of 2024.

Public order and related offences dropped to 232 in Q3 of 2025 from 313 in the same period as last year.

Road traffic offences also decreased to 237 from 266, but Q3 was the lowest figure for these incidents this year.

Dangerous and careless driving as well as speeding are classed under dangerous and negligent acts as opposed to road and traffic offences.

But, there was also a decrease in Waterford for these offences in the 12-month period from 218 to 167.

Quarter 3 refers to the months of July, August and September.

Recorded Crime statistics are compiled by the CSO using administrative records created and maintained by An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s National Police and Security Service, on their incident recording system PULSE (Police Using Leading Systems Effectively).

There was a slight increase in theft and related offences from 426 incidents in Q3 of 2024 to 489 in 12 months to Q3.

Offensive weapon incidents increased from 14 to 20, and damage to property and to the environment went from 199 incidents in Q3 of 2024 to 155 in the same period of 2025.

There was no change from 54 in assault causing harm, but other assault incidents did increase from 113 to 133.

Sexual offences decreased from 38 in Q3 of 2024 to 25 in 2025, and homicide and related offences remained the same at two incidents.

Burglary and related offences dropped from 61 to 34 and robbery, extortion and hijacking increased from nine incidents in Q3 of 2024 to 14 in the same period of 2025.

There was a small increase in fraud, deception and related offences in Waterford from 72 to 82 in the 12-months to Q3.

However, the CSO say caution should be used when interpreting these figures as there is a backlog in the reporting of these figures from financial institutions, and An Garda Siochana is working to resolve that.

In the meantime, the CSO is using reported figures from the PULSE system.

This means these figures may change in the future.
