New Aldi store planned in Waterford City

The 1,934sqm Aldi store is planned at a currently empty greenfield site.

Aldi Stores Limited has submitted plans for a new store on the outskirts of Waterford city.

The 1,934sqm store is planned at a currently empty greenfield site located to the south-eastern section of the junction of Carrickphierish Road and Paráid na bPáistí, in the townland of Carrickphierish, to the west of Waterford city centre.

The development will consist of the construction of a single-storey discount retail store with an off-licence and internal Deposit Return Scheme unit.

Provision is being made for 85 car parking spaces, including nine parent and child spaces, five accessible car parking spaces, two EV car parking spaces, two accessible EV car parking spaces and 18 bicycle parking spaces to the front of the store.

Permission is also sought for associated works to facilitate the development, including landscaping and lighting.

Accompanying planning reports outline that the proposed retail development is being brought forward as part of a larger mixed use, residential-led scheme for the wider opportunity site lands.

The remainder of the lands will be subject to a separate planning application for residential uses, including houses, apartments, duplexes, a creche, ancillary commercial floorspace, public and communal open spaces and all other infrastructure and works.

“The proposed discount food store will act as an appropriate and complementary use to the neighbourhood centre proposed under the future application,” the report stated.

A decision is expected to be made on or before July 24.
