Sinn Féin in County Waterford has launched a comprehensive national survey seeking the views of coastal communities and those involved in the Irish fishing, with regard to the current state of the industry.

In launching the campaign, General Election candidate, Councillor Conor McGuinness, said the survey will be open until November 7, and the results will be published shortly after the closing date.

Speaking to waterford-news.ie about the survey, which opened on October 10, Cllr McGuinness said: “Sinn Féin is the only party with a dedicated fisheries spokesperson and in Government we will ensure there is a Minister with specific responsibility for fisheries and the marine."

"We have been engaging with fishermen and coastal communities across Ireland, including a number of visits to Co Waterford by our spokesperson, Padraig Mac Lochlainn," he said.

"I believe that our Irish fishing industry is neglected, under supported and in dire need of strategic government led intervention," he added. Cllr McGuinness said the survey will give people an opportunity to provide firm views on the Government and state authorities' support for the industry in addition to expressing views on the current state of the industry and hopes for its future.

“I am strongly urging all those who have a passion for Irish fishing and who want to build a sustainable, prosperous and just future for the industry to give us your views," he said.
