Murder accused tells Waterford court he feels 'safer' in prison

The defendant addressed the court saying, “I feel safer in here than out in public with my name out.”

The man charged with the murder of Gillian Curran has said he feels safer in prison.

Marcus O’Neill (34) of 15 O’Brien Street, Waterford City, appeared by video link this week before Judge Kevin Staunton at Waterford District Court.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said his client had been in custody since January, and the High Court had refused bail.

The defendant addressed the court saying, “That is fine with me. I feel safer in here than out in public with my name out.”

The state requested of the court four weeks to finalise the Book of Evidence.

Judge Staunton remanded the defendant in continuing custody until May 6.
