Motorist caught travelling at 142km hour
A number of road traffic offences were recorded over the weekend
Gardaí caught a motorist travelling at 142km/h over the bank holiday weekend.
A spokesperson for the Gardaí said the detection was part of a Garda Roads Policing Operation that took place throughout the weekend.
The motorist was observed committing the offence on the N24, Belline and Rogerstown, in Piltown, Co Kilkenny.
The Garda spokesperson said the total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 108.
The spokesperson said that throughout the weekend's Roads Policing Operation, Gardaí conducted both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
"To date, a total of 39 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs)," the spokesperson told Waterford News & Star on Sunday.
"Just over 1,590 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first two days of the operation," he added.
In addition to the motorist in Piltown another driver was caught travelling at 126km/h in a 60km/h speed zone on the Waterford Road in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.
The highest speed detected over the weekend was on the M1 at Greenfields, Swords in Co Dublin, where a driver was travelling at 172km/h in a 120km/h zone.
Another motorist was observed by Gardaí driving at 127km/h on the R428 at Kylebeg, Stradbally, Co Laois. The road in question is governed by a 60km/h speed limit.
"During the first two days, 200 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt," said the Garda spokesperson.
"This weekend's road safety enforcement operation focuses on the four lifesaver offences in an effort to ensure that all road users get home safe," he added.
The four offences included: Speeding; Driving under the influence of an intoxicant; Using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
"Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone," said the spokesperson, before adding: "Slow down and stick to the speed limit, never drive under the influence of drink or drugs, wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving."
"You can help get another person home safe this weekend," he said.
