Waterford Metropolitan Council have unanimously passed a motion to name two streets after local sporting heroes Martin Óg Morrisey and Larry Guinan.

The motion was raised by Mayor Councillor Jason Murphy to name two streets within the Cork Road estate in honour of the two men.

The decision comes a few months after the sad passing of Martin Óg, a beloved hurler for Waterford and Mount Sion. Guinan and Morrissey were both on the 1959 All-Ireland winning Waterford team.

Councillor Seamus Ryan said at the meeting: "It shouldn't be lost on people that Larry Guinan is still with us and it's always important to pay tribute to somebody when they're still with us. Martin Óg used to always say that the only coach he ever needed was the one to bring him to the match, so he was a character in his own right, to Mount Sion and to Waterford."

Councillor Mary Roche noted that Martin Óg lived not too far away from the streets in question so the motion was 'very apt'. "I think the Council would honour the efforts of that team, the last of our winning team from Waterford - but hopefully not the last in time immemorial!"
