More than €63,750 has been allocated to fund permanent infrastructure for sports and community clubs in Waterford.

More than €63,750 has been allocated to fund permanent infrastructure for sports and community clubs in Waterford.

The money allocated to the county will fund the purchase and installment of storage facilities for sports teams in Waterford council parks in Fairlane Park, in Dungarvan and Kilbarry Nature Park in Waterford City, as well as locations in Tramore and Kilmacthomas.

These 'Box ups' will be made up of containers and equipment to upgrade the facilities for local sports teams and pave the way for new activities in the public parks.

They are being funded under the new Participation Nation Outdoor Fund which aims to spur physical activity in the local community by reducing the barriers to sports participation on publicly land.

“It’s welcome news that €63,750 has been allocated under the Participation Nation Outdoor Fund for Fairlane Park, Kilbarry Nature Park, Tramore and Kilmacthomas," said Fine Gael Senator John Cummins.

"This fund importantly aims to increase participation levels in sport and physical activity, something which is very important for our physical and mental health," he added.

"I want to thank the Local Sports Partnerships for their work in bringing these sports projects forward and I look forward to seeing them delivered for the benefit of their communities.”

The Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne TD, who confirmed the allocations on Thursday, October 24, said that he was "very glad to announce the first allocations under the Participation Nation Outdoor Fund which will benefit every Local Sports Partnership across the country."

"As a Government, we want to see our participation levels in sport and physical activity maximised to the greatest extent possible. Budget 2025 represented a landmark moment for Irish sport with our target of doubling the sport budget compared to 2018 levels being reached two years ahead of schedule," he said.
