A man has been ordered by Waterford District Court to pay €100 to the court's poor box for stealing fish for Christmas.

Jean Rame (41), of 15 Auburn Close, Earlscourt, Waterford, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft contrary to the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001, from Supervalu, Kilbarry, on December 23, 2025.

The court was told that both incidents happened on the same day and that the defendant stole €62.74 worth of fish and fish products, returning later to take €73.15 of the same.

The defendant had no previous convictions.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor John Fitzgerald told the court that his client returned after Christmas to pay for the goods.

He stole them in the run up to Christmas as money was short and he “was trying to do his best for his wife and children”.

Judge John Cheatle ordered the man to pay €100 to the court's poor box and said that if he did so by June 2, he would strike out the matter.
