Since the incidents, the man obtained 14 hours work a week, no longer has a car and does not drive.

A man caught speeding was found with cannabis in his car when stopped by gardaí.

During a sitting of Waterford District Court before Judge Kevin Staunton, Ahmad Zai Hazrat Khan (24), of 20 Robinson's Lane, Shortcourse, Waterford, pleaded guilty to drug driving and to driving without insurance at locations in Waterford city centre.

In relation to the drug driving offence, the court was told the gardaí stopped and searched the defendant after observing him speeding. In relation to the no insurance offence, the defendant was stopped at a traffic stop on Gladstone Street and the garda mobile device showed he did not have insurance.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said his client, who was from Afghanistan, had been working in Dublin and on moving to Waterford became unemployed.

He has, since these incidents, obtained 14 hours work a week, no longer has a car and does not drive.

Judge Staunton disqualified the defendant for 12 months for both offences.
