A man found driving while disqualified has been jailed at Waterford District Court.

John O’ Connor (48), of 75 Bride Street, Dublin, was before Judge Cephas Power for driving without insurance and without a licence on July 1, 2023, at Summerhill, Tramore.

The court was told that on the day of the incident, gardaí on patrol observed a vehicle on the road with smoke coming from the exhaust.

They stopped the driver and discovered he was not in possession of insurance or a licence, and it transpired he was disqualified from driving.

The court was told the defendant had 104 previous convictions, including 18 for no insurance and is currently serving a prison sentence for theft.

Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said that his client was in custody on this matter since April, and it was not his fault that it took so long for it to be dealt with before the court.

Judge Power noted the defendant’s previous convictions for road traffic offences but acknowledged the amount of time in custody.

She sentenced him to two months in prison instead of five months and disqualified him from driving for six years for the no-insurance charge.

The driving without a licence was taken into consideration.
