Man appears before judge for theft of whiskey and public order breaches in Waterford
Waterford courthouse
A man was in Waterford District Court recently for stealing whiskey from a local store. He was also in front of the judge on two public order offences.
The man in question, Evans Oranja, has addresses at Kilcaragh Court and Kilchohan Park, in Waterford city, but is now living in a men’s hostel in the city, his solicitor told the court.
On November 11, 2025, at 10pm, the man was found by gardaí slumped over on the footpath outside McGwire House Men’s Hostel on Bath Street.
On November 12, 2025, gardaí were once again alerted after the man stole a bottle of Jameson Whiskey from Tesco Poleberry. He was stopped outside the store by security, and the €32 bottle was confiscated from him.
On April 20 of this year on Parnell Street, he was approached by gardaí after being seen in a highly intoxicated state. He posed a danger to himself and was taken to the garda station.
His solicitor, Ken Cunningham, said the man has been engaging with mental health and substance misuse programmes. Mr. Cunningham added that his client is a former accountant.
Judge Darach McCarthy applied Section 1(2) of the Probation Act and placed the man on a 12-month probation supervision.
