Mae McGrath was honoured with a Mayoral Reception this week in recognition of her 55 years of contribution to the local community by enhancing the lives of others through music.

Since the 1940s, Mae has been playing music in churches and halls across the county, and her services to Ballybricken Church Choir have introduced generations to the joys of music.

Last month, a prestigious Benemerenti papal medal was also presented to Mae in recognition of her services.

The Benemerenti Medal is a awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy and laity for service to the Catholic Church.

The recent awarding of the medal to Mae may very well have been one of the last medals issued by Pope Francis.

This week's mayoral reception was attended by Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan.

Cllr Lola O’Sullivan who proposed hosting the reception, was also in attendance.

Speaking at the occasion in City Hall, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Jason Murphy said: “It’s a pleasure to welcome you as we come together to celebrate someone who’s been such an important part of life in Waterford for almost eight decades.

“Mae McGrath isn’t just a church organist, she’s been a constant presence in the community, enriching the lives of those around her with music, kindness and unwavering dedication.

“Her music has lifted spirits, comforted people in difficult times and made joyful occasions even more memorable.”

As well as her work in the Ballybricken Church Choir, Mae was recognised for volunteering in schools across Waterford, organising nativity plays and musical shows for over 55 years.

She introduced the joys of music to over 10,000 young people who have taken part in these productions over the years.

Mayor Murphy added: “Mae has been a guide, a steady hand and someone people could count on, whether it was to hit the right note, or just offer some encouragement and even counselling on some occasions.

“Thank you for the music, the time and the care gave to so many over the years. Your dedication has left a deep mark on this community and we’re truly grateful.”

Speaking after the reception, Mae thanked her family and friends for their support, and Cllr O’Sullivan for proposing the honour.

“I’m so grateful to my lovely family, they were all great to me and I just want to thank you all for this” she said.

“I’m very honoured, proud and surprised. It’s a great occasion for us all.”
