Long-running street light saga comes to an end in county Waterford
Councillors raise the matter in Cappoquin every month at the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council
The long-running street light outage in Cúil Na Circa, Cappoquin, has come to an end.
Councillor John Pratt provided the update on social media.
“Lights in Cúil Na Circa, Cappoquin, eventually fixed. Delighted they are sorted, but totally unacceptable the length of time it has taken.
“Never had to highlight an issue as much for such a long time,” Cllr Pratt wrote.
Cúil Na Circa has been raised at almost every Dungarvan-Lismore District Council for the past year, and the March sitting was no different.
Cllr Pratt raised the issue during the update from the planning section.
He cited the then estimated time of completion of winter and said he couldn’t believe it was taking so long.
Following the meeting, Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy said in a statement that the situation was unacceptable and that people should not have to live with ongoing safety concerns in their own neighbourhood.
“I recently spoke with one resident who told me she now sleeps with her hurley beside the bed because she is so frightened.
"That absolutely broke my heart. No one should feel that afraid in their own home, but when areas are left in darkness and we simply do not have the garda presence we need in West Waterford, it adds to people’s fear,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
Cllr Mulcahy has since welcomed the announcement that the lights are now working, but asked that people still get in touch if there are issues in their area.
