Part of South East Greenway.

The latest stretch of South-East Greenway, running between Curraghmore and Abbey Road, Ferrybank, was recently opened to the public.

The opening of this 7km section of the Greenway features a 160m-long mural, which was funded by Creative Ireland and designed and painted by local arts agency Street Art Ink. The mural was inspired by input from local communities and includes many well-known landmarks, including the Ferrybank Grotto and The Pope’s Tower.

It was announced at a recent sitting of the Piltown municipal district that the design for the 9km stretch of greenway between Curraghmore and Ballyverneen is still in the works.

So far, of the 24 kilometres of Greenway some 13 kilometres are now open to the public.

At this week’s meeting, Chairman for Piltown MD Cllr Ger Frisby noted that it’s “been a long push and drag to get it done” but that there may be a need to rethink the signage on the Ferrybank side to make it clearer for the public on how to approach the Greenway from Ferrybank.

Cllr Tomás Breathnach commented that the new mural along the Greenway “showcases the work of Creative Ireland” and is a “huge addition to the place”.

It was also confirmed at the municipal district meeting that the detailed designs for both the South–North Link Road and Greenway Trailhead Carpark have been completed, with contract documents for construction works expected to be advertised in the coming weeks, according to Acting Director of Services for Kilkenny County Council Ian Gardener.
