The current 8.15pm Heuston to Carlow train is now deferred to 8.20pm, and is being extended to Waterford. It will also serve Muine Bheag (Bagenalstown), Kilkenny and Thomastown.

This will provide a later last service for stations between Dublin and Carlow and on to Muine Bheag, Kilkenny, Thomastown and Waterford on Mondays to Saturdays.

The 9.37pm Carlow to Heuston service will now commence from Waterford at 8.20pm, additionally serving Thomastown, Kilkenny and Muine Bheag. This will provide a later last service from Waterford, Thomastown, Kilkenny and Muine Bheag for stations between Carlow and Dublin on Mondays to Saturdays. There will also be intermediate timing changes to this service from Carlow to Heuston.

An additional service each way (Dublin to Waterford to Dublin) on Sundays was also announced, bringing Sunday service levels to five in each direction.

Speaking on the news, Waterford T.D. Marc Ó Cathasaigh said: “It is vital for economic, environmental and social progress to have good connectivity between our capital city and Waterford, and indeed between Kilkenny and Waterford too.”

"This late service will be a big benefit to people who might be working a couple of days a week in Dublin, giving them greater flexibility to either work on a bit later or to have a bite to eat before hitting for home.

“I can see it being a huge help to students across the South East attending SETU in Waterford too, as well as boosting the night-time economy connections between Waterford and Kilkenny. I am confident it will see good passenger numbers from the off.”

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Senator John Cummins also welcomed the news, saying, "I want to thank Irish Rail for taking on board the feedback, which the public gave, and I would encourage as many people as possible to make use of the service when it is operational.”
